#Quick Crafty Makes 6 - Machine Embroidery - Stag Beetle

beetle machine embroidery

After four weeks summer holiday it's back to work for me, the summer has been great, we've been so busy and done so much.  Now that time is going to be limited I thought I'd russel up a last minute craft project.  I saw this stag beetle template in issue 28 of Mollie Makes, I thought it'd be perfect for some free motion machine embroidery.  For tips on how to do this please take a look at a previous post I've written on the subject.

I thought this would look good on the wall in a vintage frame or even left in the embroidery hoop,  alternatively you could use this idea as a decoration for numerous items such as a motif on a cushion or bag.  I'd like to sew some other insects and make a small collection of six legged mini beasts to adorn my walls.

For this one I've traced, using a pencil, on to some calico and placed the fabric into an embroidery hoop and off I went!  You can find you own motif to trace in many places such as in books, the internet or use fabrics and wallpapers as inspiration.  I also like the idea of sewing some insects in neon brights onto a grey toned fabric, i think this could look great.  Machine embroidery is so quick to do and gives immediate satisfying results and this technique is very forgiving if a mistake it made, it's ok for it to look a bit naive or rough and ready.

Gathered by Mollie Makes

The much anticipated interactive digital craft magazine 'Gathered' is now available to download for iPad users.  I downloaded my copy today and have been really impressed, it is beautifully designed and very user friendly with lots of exciting features.  Stand out articles for me are the inspiring interview with Meredith Crawford who talks about discovering her love of blogging, a lovely article about old skool typewriters and a great downloadable Liberty print to jazz up your iPad wallpaper.

There is also a step by step 'how to' tutorial on how to make some super cute needle felt acorns as well as how to customise your clothing using stencils and fabric paint.

Additional features include music, videos and book reviews....it seems they have thought of everything!  Oh and you can follow them on Twitter and Facebook too.

They are so confident you will like it he first issue is free, what's not to love?

The Simple Things Magazine.....it's arrived!!!

It's finally here, the new magazine from the makers of Mollie Makes called 'The Simple Things'. This first edition is packed with interesting articles, recipes and inspiration. I'm already inspired to try some new recipes such as the warmed Camembert with rosemary, honey and almonds. Stand out articles include Ghost Signs, (old hand-painted advertising signs) The Expert : Cheese, an expert guide to buying, eating and storing cheese and Seed Swap, a look at the global seed swapping movement. Each article was insightful, informative and interesting. I've also fallen in love with some of the homewares featured, added to my wish list is a cuckoo table clock (www.rume.co.uk) and a wise words cushion (www.johnlewis.com). Click on the link below to check out The Simple Things. Highly recommended.
